The virtual cycling classic for everyone - the ŠKODA Velotour E-Race on May 1st at 2 p.m.
Also this year May 1st remains an obligatory date in the calendar, because for the first time the cycling classic starts digitally. Instead of riding on the streets between Eschborn and Frankfurt, cyclists will sweat on their training bikes next week. And what has been common for years on May 1st will also apply in 2020: everyone can participate! Led by current champion Pascal Ackermann and local hero John Degenkolb, professionals and amateur athletes can experience the cycling classic digitally together at the ŠKODA Velotour E-Race.
The race over 40 kilometers from Eschborn through Frankfurt City and back to Eschborn is run on the Rouvy training platform. Footage from the original route of the ŠKODA Velotour Skyline brings a true classic cycling atmosphere into the virtual simulation. The video is made available by the Frankfurt Rotary Cycling Team. The charity team has been starting at Eschborn-Frankfurt since 2013 to draw attention to the fight against polio.
Registration for the digital race starts on Monday. To guarantee a smooth start an early registration and trying out with your own racing bike is recommended.
To make the interactive experience perfect, the ŠKODA Velotour E-Race is also part of the program of the four-hour cycling classic special on May 1st on the HR TV program. The show with Florian Nass and Fabian Wegmann starts at 1:15 p.m. and offers the participants of the virtual race the perfect warm-up atmosphere. Pascal Ackermann, John Degenkolb and other professionals will share their classic cycling tips live before the start of the ride together at 2:00 p.m.
Snapshots are expressly requested for the ŠKODA Velotour E-Race, because the best photos and videos of the participants are shown in the HR broadcast on TV. In addition, attractive prizes will be raffled among all participants. So one winner can look forward to a Wahoo Kickr Smart Trainer. This year, the tech fitness company is new to the circle of partners and supports the ŠKODA Velotour E-Race as a technical partner. The other prizes include a place in the VIP car at the next cycling classic and a professional jersey set provided by the Team Gazprom-RusVelo.
ROUVY is a cycling platform that allows you to ride on well-known Alpine roads without leaving your home. The application simulates real outdoor riding with high-quality videos based on GPS route profiles and augmented/mixed reality. Augmented Routes combine animated 3D riders with real-life geolocated video footage, so cyclists and triathletes can enjoy the endless variety of iconic locations from the comfort of their homes. Just connect the bike trainer to Rouvy, and choose from over 4,000 interactive route films by length or profile to fit your training plan at any time.
Under this hashtag, we would like to call on the ŠKODA cycling family and all friends of cycling not to let themselves get stuck in times like these, to keep fit and to exchange ideas “virtually” in order to better meet the new challenges of everyday life.
From April 29, we would like to pedal with you once a week at our approximately 1-hour virtual cycling events that take place on Instagram, STRAVA, Rouvy and / or Zwift. But this is not just about sweating together, but also about the shared experience: Our rides are led by our cycling ambassadors. Well-known cycling fans provide entertainment during the trips and also invite one or the other “participant” to different challenges. The grand finale of our # Ride2Unite initiative will then take place on June 3, on the occasion of World Bike Day.

Since 2013, Michael Hanke and Moritz Dick and their Rotary Cycling team have been tirelessly collecting donations in the fight against the polio virus on May 1st. After the cancellation of the May 1st race due to the corona virus, they saw their annual project in danger and collected video material from the 40km route early Sunday morning to lay the foundation for a virtual race.
DESPITE CORONA: ALSO POLIO STAYS IMPORTANT!
In addition to the acute fight against corona, the viral disease polio is absolutely necessary. There is reason to be concerned that if global vaccination campaigns are suspended due to restrictions on movement and contacts, polio will spread again. We call on all cycling enthusiasts to help completely eradicate this defeatable disease. Rotary clubs have been active around the world for over thirty years to provide information about polio and to collect donations that can be prevented by swallowing vaccines.

Wahoo Fitness has always had a strong cycling affinity. As a provider of high-performance smart trainers and GPS bike computers, we support professional teams such as Bora-Hansgrohe, Deceunick-Quickstep, Alpecin-Fenix, Ineos, AG2R La Mondiale, Akea-Samsic and are - especially in these times - an important partner for professionals as well as for every dedicated cyclist. The way to support traditional events is not far. Unfortunately, many beautiful races and events cannot take place at the moment - except as virtual races.
With this partnership we would like to express our support and commitment to all cyclists beyond pure top-class sport and we are looking forward to seeing as many cyclists as possible on May 1st together with some professionals on the virtual route.
